Jericho fans are working hard to save the series… again – this time producing a “Save Jericho” TV commercial and raising the funds to have it broadcast during prime time over two hundred times. See the video after the jump.
This is now the third escalation in efforts to have the inspirational series re-ressurected by the fans after it was cancelled due to a lack of performance according to the Neilsen ratings system (a system I have criticised in an earlier entry – Nielsen Ratings – Demise of the TV Networks.). After its initial cancellation fans rallied behind it in a campaign to send TONNES of peanuts (in a tribute to one of the quotes in the last aired episodes – “Nuts to you”) to the CBS headquaters. The result was an abreviated second season – which unfortunately suffered a similar fate; despite a loyal and vocal fan base. The series simply couldn’t compete with the “surge viewer” ratings that casual series such as reality tv received. Unfortunately the business models employed by the tv networks only cater to the initial viewer count surges rather than the long term profitability of the series (Reality/Gameshow tv brings in initial surges but has very little value in dvd sales and syndication deals; where as scripted or special interest series don’t bring the initial surge numbers of the casual shows; but continue making sums of money decades after the series finishes.) and the result was the series cancelled again.
Hopefully – this next round of action will get their attention…
